Mt. Adams attempt April 06
A few days after Crystal shut down Dan, Bryan, Bryans friend josh and myself decided to make a early season attempt at Mt Adams as the promise of bluebird skies was too god to pass up.
When we started the day at around 3,000 feet we wanted to make it up to the Lunch counter to build base camp around 10’000 feet. At around 6,500 feet we noticed a cloud heading our way thinking nothing of it we kept moving
The weather changed from blue skies to a raging blizzard in now time with snow blowing sideways. We were totally unprepared on a exposed ridge and all visibility was gone. By this time I was completely exhausted and the splitboard wasn’t connecting back into snowboard mode. My body was so tired that I almost fell asleep but instead I slid down a few hundred feet and we dug a shelter to put our tents in.
That night was brutal the only thing that kept us somewhat warm was the reheating of our Nalgene bottles.
The next morning dawned with blue skies so after the 30 minute process of getting on Frozen snowboard boots we started moving.
Half of our group decided they were only going a few hundred feet higher as the corn was turning into Ice and gave us a hour window to make it to the false summit. We made it about 30 minutes and 300 vert shy of the false summit before we turned around and started our almost 7’000 vert run back to the car.
Dans Run first
Then my run
The corn was amazing on our way back but as a snowboarder the flat road sucked
The lesson learned be prepared for the worst and the extra pound or two for a warm sleeping bag is worth it.
