Midteraksia is a north facing ridge that rises to the summit of Rostafjellet in the Tamokdalen area. The bowl is located a few kilometres west of Tamokhuset through the Skjellelva drainage. Being North facing the slopes can offer some of the better easy access powder skiing within the area from Northeast to Northwest. Though the ridge makes it all the way to the summit of Rostafjellet the last 50 meters are quite technical and rarely ridable.
Why Midteraksia
A late season storm hit Northern Norway dropping off a bit of new snow. Wanting to make the most out of it I scoured the topographical maps. Throughout the season I had looked at the North Ridge of Midteraksia. Chatting with Rasmus and Mike Cheney they were game to head out there in hopes of making some powder turns.
Ski Touring up Midteraksia
Parking at a branch in the road we started skinning on the xx trail until reaching Skjellelva. skinning up the creeks right side visibility was limited. Making our way to the lower basin the clouds started lifting and I made a wide sweeping skin track to stay away from exposure to potential avalanches.
Putting in the trail I was surrounded by numerous amazing ski options. Under our feet was a perfect canvas of powder which just made us more and more excited. Finally we made our way to a spot where there were rocks above and decided to transition from there.
Last Powder Run of the 2019 Season
One at a time we dropped in following the ridge before dropping into the main bowl. I hadn’t expected the conditions to be this good but we couldn’t feel any ice below.
Once in the basin I came up with a plan to skin on some mellow slopes over to the base of Rostakulen’s main headwall for the final descent. Being a direct run to the car we wouldn’t have to deal with a painfully flat exit. By now my phone had died as we sidehilled to our dropping in point. Switching over we were able to ride fall line turns all the way back to the trailhead.
