Everyone these days have heard of the Lyngen Alps but 10kms South is a road that runs through a high mountain pass called Tamokdalen. Within this valley is a Splitboard community run through the Tamokhusetwhich has been slowly growing for over a decade. I was fortunate to arrive and do care taking at the hut for the first time in 2019 where I got a feel for the terrain and started understanding the potential of Tamokdalen ski tours and possibilities.
Unlike most of the Lyngen Alps a huge advantage to the area is that it is based out of a valley and allows for ski touring on both sides of the road. This gives you an endless opertunity for different aspects and easy road side touring. Not only that but directly behind the hut there is a huge zone you can Splitboard without even needing the help of a car.
On the opposite side of the road there are numerous South facing slopes as well as some of the more popular snowboarding runs. This area has some of the best tree skiing when storms are raging as well as numerous options once the sun finally arrives.
Beyond the Road
One of the great things about Tamok is that there are much fewer ski tours in the area compared to the Lyngen Alps but once beyond the road you are almost guaranteed to have the mountains to yourself. There are numerous valleys that run west to east with lines that seldom see any people so if you like longer approaches then the options are endless.
But one of the most special things about ski touring in Northern Norway is the midnight sun. Starting in late April the only thing that is limiting your ski tour is both your energy and the weather. If the forecast is calling for the weather to clear at midnight it isn’t a problem as being so far north the sun and light is around 24 hours. This is a unique thing about the Arctic and in combination with the mountain options it just adds to the beauty of the area.
Does it get snow in the Tamokdalen Valley
Unlike the Lyngen Alps which is next to the sea the Tamokdalen valley starts at a higher elevation giving you a better opertunity to ski tour from the road. Another benefit is with changing wind directions it can range from a maritime climate to a continental snowpack. The snowpack can easily be 3 meters deep in the heart of winter which buries the rocks and almost guarantees if you time your trip right you will easily find powder conditions.
Ski touring from the Tamokdalen Road
In 2022 I was fortunate to return to Tamokdalen for another 6 week stint and a better understanding of the area. Below is a list of many ski tours throughout those 2 seasons working with both conditions and weather. Thank you for making it to both the website and this page specifically and enjoy the Tamokdalen ski tours.
