With a certain virus traveling around the world borders have been shut down. When spring arrived I found myself isolated in Finland and unable to head North on my seasonal migration. Istinden in the Lyngen Alps

The day before my friend Ben Arrived in town my good friend David came up with a plan. We would park off the road then after climbing Instinden via the South side we would ride the North face as Istinden in the Lyngen Alps is one of the best lines in Norway. He is a local and I was game for where ever he wanted to go so I was in as we drove to the bottom of a massive debris path that went all the way to the water and started climbing, first in dirt but after a bit of climbing we finally made it to the snow.

Ski touring Fastdalstinden in the Lyngen Alps

Enjoying a perfect sunrise view on Fastdalstinden

What does one do when they are touring solo in Northern Norway on a day of celebration….. A Sunrise mission and Birthday run ski touring on Fastdalstinden in the Lyngen Alps!!

After leaving Kviteberg on foot I walked the first 3 kms at midnight trying to make it to the summit of Fastdalstinden while taking in one of the last sunsets before the midnight sun arrived in the upcoming days.

Istinden, Tamokdalen

  • Time 6 Hours
  • Distance 11 kms
  • Vertical 1,300 meters
  • Weather conditions: A sunny day with minimal winds and good north facing snow
  • Route Description After a mellow climb to Istinden Ridge we switched to crampons and climbed up and over the Summit to a low col. From there we rode into the basin finding a path through the cliffs on the skiers left than rode into the flat basin than skinned around the shoulder before descending to the XX trail.
