A Quick Stop in the Remarkables

With the snowpack returning it was time to head south into the Otago Country. Wiggles and I took a bus down to the Queenstown area where we met up with Adam Flemming. We made our way up to the local ski hill for a backcountry ski tour in the Remarkables.

We made our way up and over the ski hill before dropping off the backside into Wye Creek. Adam was interested in riding a line off in the distance so we started making our way towards it.

Dropping into Wye creek

The weather quickly started deteriorating as we were heading further in the backcountry. We quickly realized that we could find ourselves in a white out so we decided to change our plans.

No snow in lower Wye Creek

It seemed that the weather was looking better towards the Double Cone. With that in mind we decided that we would head towards it on our way out. If Double Cone still was looking good we would try and get a run off it.

The place is a tad bit scenic
Double Cone shines in the sun

Double Cone was still in the sun and looked like it had a tasty couloir so we skinned up a mellow shoulder to check it out from above.

Skinning up Double Cone

The line looked great so we transitioned to snowboarding hoping it rode as good as it looked.

I think it goes?

It turned out to be great snow as we rode down the chute. We had planned on going to another place but in the end we were riding in a different area.

SCORE!!!

We were expected the weather to shut in so it was time to leave the backcountry of the Remarkables. That night we rested and Wiggles and I got our gear ready to head into the Routeburn area for a longer ski tour.
