The North Couloir of Rornestinden is one of the most scenic lines in all of the Lyngen Alps. Located just a few kilometres west of Lyngsedit it can be accessed directly from the road. Riding from the low col the the North Couloir runs all the way to the base of the valley. This is one of those rare runs that you can look down into the fjord while making your turns.
Heading Out for a Ski Tour After the Lyngen Alps Traverse
After finishing off the Lyngen Alps Traverse Illka and Jamie had left and Wiggles and I still were hanging around for a few days. We were staying at David’s house and he came up with the idea to go for a sunset ski tour. He mentioned that the North Couloir of Rornestinden would be getting the afternoon alpenglow and it would be a great way for Wiggles to see the area.
Leaving from the road we started climbing through the thick trees. Our route up was direct as we climbed up the steep slopes. Having just got out of the mountains after 2 weeks we were pretty beat up still.
Making our way into the basin the slope angle lowered dramatically. Wanting to make it up to the low col we skinning up the main drainage for a few seconds before doing a long traverse to the entrance of the North Couloir of Rornestinden
Once getting on top of the ridge our view opened up. We were back in the sun and looking at the Lyngen Alps in all its glory. The sun was still pretty high in the sky and was casting alpenglow on us as we transitioned to snowboarding.
Snowboarding Down the North Couloir of Rornestinden
With the slopes basking in the light we made the most out of it by walking over to good photo spots before taking our snowboard turns. While the snow wasn’t deep it was still soft and kicked up snow with every turn.
Gathering back together we traversed over to the North Couloir of Rornestinden. Being the only way through the cliff bands below it was important not to mess up riding down.
Soon enough we were back in the shadow line and had a good view of the terrain below. From here on out we followed the drainage all the way to the valley below.
Once in the valley below the North Couloir of Rornestinden it was time to walk back to the car on the shoreline. Walking back we looked at the peaks still glowing in the distance. It had been a short but awesome ski tour with great weather which seemed to be rare this season.
