Koppangsfjellet is the first peak within the Strupbeen Glacier Complex. Located on the North East section of the Lyngen Alps if weather allows it offers some of the best views around. With a summit elevation of 1,223 meters it quickly gains elevation once in the Glacial area.
What do you do when it has been cloudy for the past few days and you are itching to get out on a ski tour. Both David and I chatted about wether or not to even go out but decided to check out snow conditions. Hoping that since Koppangsfjellet is on the East side of the Lyngen Alps he would have better weather we made out way out there.
Ski Touring from Lenangen
Hiking out of Lenangen we could see the clouds on the top of the surrounding mountains. It was quickly obvious that we would have to stay on the lower section of the Glacier in hopes that we would be below the clouds.
Once making our way past the Mousetrap gully we final could take a moment to rest. Looking around we decided to check out the glaciers cave at its base before doing a traverse towards Koppangsfjellet.
Skiing the Lower Slopes of Koppangsfjellet
Climbing up we made it to the cloud line before deciding it wasn’t worth going any higher. It was time to turns around and ski the steep headwall below us. By now it was snowing wet and heavy flakes which would make low angle riding hard but luckily we were on a steeper face.
With the weather quickly getting worse there was no reason to hang around. Doing a low angle traverse we were able to ride out of the Mousetrap without a problem and soon were back in the village of Lenangen. Though we didn’t have the best conditions it was well worth just going outside.
This wasn’t exactly a good trip to get an idea of Koppangsfjellet but I would do it again a year later. Knowing what I do know it is a great ski tour and one of the best views in the Lyngen Alps as you have a huge glacial mass split by the peak. In a sense it is a classic if you make it to the Strupbeen Glacier.
