With only 48 hours before flying back to Northern Finland Ben Starkey and I tried to make the most out of what little time I had left. With a warm front that left 5 days of sunshine and pretty cooked snow we decided to check out a north facing zone that may have still held good snow.
The snow conditions were horribly firm as we skinned up the mountain and quickly turned to bootpack following some old snowshoe tracks until gaining the ridge and switching over to skinning.Once at our highpoint we came up with a plan to drop to the bottom of the steep pitch than put a bootpack directly back up our ski tracks. Than on the ridge we could skin over to another line and utilize our bootpack once in the valley. The first line was a little bit of a NE aspect which felt a bit more heavy as we dropped in one at a time ridding down to the the solo tree in the valley. After a few minutes of eating food and turning our boards to Splitmode we put them on our backpacks and step by step climbed back up the line in knee deep snow, all the time staying in our snowboard tracks. For our second line we decided to head for a direct north facing aspect heading for a nice, steep and wide open gully. I dropped in first and did a ski cut of the slope and after traversing to a safe spot Ben rode it top to bottom and directly back to our bootpack. The conditions were much better on the north facing slope and we were stoked as we rode back to our bootpack, quickly transitioning and making our way back up top 15 minutes later. For our final final run in the area we dropped into a much steeper chute as we felt more confident with the snowpack. With a little over an hour of sunlight left in the day we decided to give ourselves time for the heinous exit and draw back of the zone bootpacking back up to the ridge. The next hour was 2,500 feet of steep riding in thick trees bushwhacking our way back down to the road coming out at the bottom tired, soaked and smiling. It was a great day and way to end my time in the Cascades. Thanks Ben for being a great partner and being down for what could be a meh tour.
