Narvik ski resort is a gem in Northern Norway with only a hand full of lifts to the upper ridge. What the resort lacks in terrain it makes up with backcountry as only a small section of the mountain is utilised. Being at the end of a fjord it gets a lot of moisture which means snow in the high country. Though I have only been within the resort area I look forward to returning soon so I can spend some time exploring the area.
Heading out to Narvik Ski Resort
The drive from Lofoten to Lyngen is around 5 hours so we decided to break it up with a small ski tour up the ski resort. While it wouldn’t be backcountry at least we could ride some groomers instead of the ice we had been dealing with over the past week. After watching the sunrise at our camping spot we were on the road and heading East.
After a few hours we were at the Narvik Ski resort. I had two options either I could buy a one time lift ticket or just skin up the area. Wanting to save money I decided just to climb the area. Looking at the trail map I was blown away with all the potential backcountry lines.
Wait....is that Powder??
Hiking a bit above the last chairlift I was happy to see a little bit of new snow. Finally there was something worth skiing but the best part was the view of the surrounding mountains and the sea below.
After a few powder turns we were back on the groomers and heading towards the bottom. It was kind of sad that this was my best skiing over the week but I would take whatever I could get. It was a great reason to get out of the car and make some turns.
