Sometimes everything goes smooth while other times you seem to be on a bad streak. By now I was still quarantined for potential Corona while my ski touring partners (Titti and Jukkis) had left for Finland and I was now touring solo. The storms were still raging outside and the weather windows were brief and always early morning. Not wanting to go too far from the Huset I decided to head back to Sjufjellet starting my trip at 1 a.m.
The original plan was to check out the Southwest ridge route that we had climbed a few days prior. Once below the South face I put in a long traverse over to the ridge making a catch line if I wanted to do multiple laps of the area. After arriving on the flat bench in the middle of the face I stopped at the spot where I needed to crampon up. Being solo I needed to make sure the snowpack was safe so I dug a pit on the slopes and nothing moved but there was a lot of windloading where I was. Not feeling happy with my results I dug out an isolated column and skinned directly above it cause in to fail on a week layer. Knowing that the route wouldn’t be safe I turned around and rode back to my lower skin track.
Once back on the lower skin track I decided to climb Sjufjellet via the standard route cutting switchback after switchback on the crux before making it to the upper basin still an hour before sunrise. The snow up high was knee deep as I broke in the skin track and visibility was pretty terrible. After around an hour of brutal work I finally arrived on the summit waiting for the forecasted weather window. My hope was to ride down basking in the morning alpenglow.
The sunrise was around 4 a.m. and the sun was still behind a cloud deck as I patiently waited. After sitting on my backpack for 2 hours and watching the weather keep getting worse I got frustrated and decided to ride back down. Once at the base the weather improved and I had a clear view of my skin track as well as the turns.
The joke is that someone needs to leave and then the weather will improve and that is exactly what happened. I arrived back at the house around 8 a.m. and now everything was in the sun. I got some amazing turns but I had to follow my skin track just to be able to see anything.
In the photo above my first route is on the left stopping just below the upper rock band and my second route is on the right. Being solo I felt safer putting in a whole lot of switchbacks compared to traversing the face.
Pretty short Trip Report but there was nothing really to take a photo of…My bad.
